About

Introduction to Crime-Eye

Crime-Eye is a UK informational crime tracking website that allows users to check how populated crimes are in different neighbouring areas. UK crime data is collected from PoliceAPI which is made freely accessible to the public, our map is built from MapBox to provide users an interactive and searchable map, and our real-time news is provided by NewsDataAPI.

General Use

Crime-Eye is used to convey specific and helpful information related to crime in UK areas you search for or for finding crimes in your current local area. Users are able to create an account by either creating a local account or signing in with their Twitter account. An account must be signed in to be able to access our interactive map as part of our age-restriction policy. Users must be 13 years or older to access our map.

Disclaimer notice: We strongly do not encourage users to actively seekout crime in real-life and therefore take no reponsibility in the outcomes of personal injuries or liabilites with the usage of this website.

Instructional Usage

Users are able to search for crime data in specific UK (England, Northern Ireland and Wales) locations using our geocoder search bar, once an area is searched a list of valid UK areas will be returned in a selectable list in which the user must select an area.

A list of markers on the map will be generated, where each individual marker represents one crime that has occurred. Clicking on the marker will provider an informational pop-up that will show more information relating to this single crime.

If users wish to search for more precise locations, our geocoder search bar allows the inputs of longitude and latitude coordinate pairs in the form of [Lng, Lat]. For example, if users wished to search for a longitude of -0.5 and a latitude of 50 it will be entered as "-0.5, 50" in the geocoder search bar.

We offer a mouse cursor tracker at the bottom-left of the map, which provides the current coordinates of the map using the cursor's current position relative to the map's geometric position to assist users in finding a specific pair of coordinates on the map.
